Message from the Secretary

Come one! Come All! We will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the building of our club house. Did you know the club house was built as a team effort by members. What an undertaking. I think the key word there is "team". I personally feel that one of the best features of our club is the fact that we work as a team. That's what keeps all of our activities, leagues and shooting sports so active. Members who care! Members who do what they can when they can. Looking back 50 years ago, I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to coordinate the building of our club house. The time, effort and hard work. It showed the making of a strong club with dedicated members. And we've been building from there.

Come up and enjoy dinner with your fellow members on September 20th. If you are a lifetime member, and participated in the building of our club house, we'd love to hear some stories. Call the club to put your name on the reservation list.

As always, it is best to know how many people will attend beforehand so that we can buy the proper amount of food. Reserve early.

Archery Clinic: We will be having another archery clinic and fun shoot on October 5th from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help with this event. If you can help out please contact Rich Gagnon at Riggnn@aol.com. If your child has his own archery equipment, please bring it. See the attached flyer for more information.

Grounds: Thank you to members who have been cutting the grass. Grass cutting is ongoing. Wood has been delivered. Help is needed to stack it.

Massachusetts Jr. Conservation Camp: As you know, the club sponsored one camper this year. It was held at a new sight in Chesterfield MA. Camper, Rachael Ferranti attended the September monthly meeting to personally thank the membership for sponsoring her. To quote her "It was the best time of my life". She told of her experience and even showed some pictures. Her enthusiasm and excitement surely made the membership feel the programs offered are truly worthwhile in getting young people involved in outdoor sports. They are the future sportsmen and women of this state. It is worth the investment.

Can Committee: The Club would like to thank the Can Committee for sponsoring campers to attend Mass. Jr. Conservation Camp. It is a tradition that is very much appreciated by our youth and their families. THANK YOU. Did you know? The Can Committee started many years ago by Roy Anderson, Warren "Giant" Payne, and Bill Murray (deceased). Over the years they have collected thousands of dollars worth of cans and donated that money to many charities and events in the area. Much of that money has been donated to our club to help support our Kid's Fishing Derby and Mass. Jr. Conservation Camp. If you have cans to recycle and don't like to bother with them yourself why don't you put them in a bag marked FOR ROY ANDERSON and leave them at the club. Every can counts!

Condolences: The club membership sends its sincere condolences to Gary Zancewicz whose mother passed away.

Web site Update: Once again I would like to thank all members who have been viewing the monthly newsletter on our web site. This saves the club a great deal of money not only for postage but also printing. Here is an example of the savings: With a total membership of 337 x 37 cents = $124.69 per month for postage = $1496.28 per year. Since 170 members now view the newsletter on-line the current figures for postage are: 167 x 37 cents = $61.79 per month = $741.48 per year. These figures are only estimates but you can see the savings. The printing charges are additional but also cut in half. So please!!!! If you have a computer and have not given us your email address, please do so. If you change your email address don't forget to update our records. Please contact Bruce Harvey at bruceharvey1@juno.com with any updates.

Halloween Hayride: Details are being worked on for a fun Halloween celebration on Saturday, October 25th. Watch for more information shortly.

Trap News

The Club Trap Championship for the 2003 season will be held on September 13th starting at 9 AM. This is open to all Club members and will consist of a 100 bird shoot. There will be winners for each of two divisions determined by team placement and/or known ability.

We will also have some fun shoots after the formal competition - protection, adios, doubles. Following the shoot, there will be an Italian style dinner available for those that would like to stay and for one more time kick around the past years shooting accomplishments or woes! A $10 fee will be asked for those who would like to eat after the shoot.

Congratulations and thanks go out to the members of this year's two trap teams that competed and represented our Club for the 23rd year in the Greater Lowell Trap League. The members of the AA Team are: Joe Mettee, Mark Lewis, Vin Bartolomeo, Dave Krauss, Tom Damkowitch, Charlie Samios, Dick Bregoli, and Carl Repucci. Although the team record of 4 and 14 doesn't look too good, the team average was the highest of any CR&GC team in our 23 year history - all shooters had an average over 23 with a team average of 23.61. The D team members are: Bruce Harvey, Jim Gallagher, Charlie Atherton, Robert Alpert, Artty Kinsman, Henry Dane, Mike Barton and Kim Sullivan. The D team finished in second place in their division with a 10 and 8 record - nice job!

Trap activity slows with the ending of summer, but it was another good year at the trap field with both experienced and new shooters coming out pretty much every week. Thanks to all the Committee members for their help with providing range coverage and we look forward to more participation next year.

Vin Bartolomeo, Chairman

The Nominating Committee will present the slate of officers for election at the October Monthly Meeting. Our elections will take place at the November Monthly Meeting.

Archery News

As previously announced we had a well attended archery meeting Thursday evening September 5th. The main topic of discussion was "what we should do in 2004 regarding archery shoots". We have a Bay State Archers meeting Sept. 8th to pick shoot dates for next year so a decision was needed for the delegates to follow-up on. It was decided that we would take one shoot date from last year that being the May shoot. When the Bay State schedule is finalized pick another two dates to hold independent shoots of our own. One date hopefully in August will be set-aside for a totally traditional archery shoot much like the one held this year and was surprisingly successful, and the second for a hunters' shoot to be in September or early October. This is a new concept brought up by Bill Jarmo which will be hunting shots with various problems (obstructed views, tree stand shots and other misfortunes). More regarding these three shoots will be coming as time goes on.

The one thing that will not change, to be successful at these endeavors we need help from the club members in general not just the archery contingent. Keep this in mind for next year and keep some time open to help and shoot.

One final point is an orientation archery clinic run by Rich Gagnon on October 5th, this is of importance to all the new members of the club. The main thrust of this shoot will be instructional concerning 3-D rules, regulations and course etiquette. We were too lax during our traditional shoot allowing inexperienced archers to shoot independently. The inexperience combined with little knowledge of 3-D rules (esp safety concerns) could have led to bad happenings. This concern is heightened when you are sharing the course with compound bow shooters with their very sophisticated equipment. An accident involving an arrow traveling at 300+fps would not be a good thing. If you or your children intend to shoot next year in any of these club held shoots all will have to attend this or future clinics to do so. The up side to the clinic is that fun will be had in spite of the instructional aspect with different events for the kids to try in addition to a mini 3-D course. There will also be the usual fine CR&G eats. Watch for fliers and broadcast messages with details.

IMPORTANT SPORTSMEN'S NEWS

GOAL Rally/Lobby Day at the State House
When: October 23, 2003 11:00 AM.
Where: Inside the State House

On October 23, 2003 Gun Owners' Action League will be conducting a "Lobby Day" at the State House in Boston. This is an opportunity for our members to discuss with their local State Representatives and Senators the mistreatment of gun owners in our Commonwealth. For five years the gun owners of Massachusetts have been waiting for the legislature to take action in correcting the misdeeds that have been done against them, ranging from the unchecked discretionary licensing system, to the fraudulent Attorney General's regulations on handguns, to the outrageous new freedom taxes charged to citizens wishing to own a firearm. The unfair burdens placed on us have gone well beyond what any sensible person should have to put up with. It is time for the legislature to do the right thing and fix a corrupted unworkable system that continually hamstrings hard working lawful citizens.

GOAL will begin the event with a speech from Michael D. Yacino, followed by comments from legislators that will be joining us. After the speaking portion of the event, GOAL will distribute lobbying materials. We'll give you the latest updates on what bills are pending, make sure that you have names and room numbers of the representatives and senators from your area. The event will kick off at 11:00 AM. Since the State House has new "security" measures in place, GOAL suggests that our members begin arriving at least one hour earlier in order to check in firearms and get through the checks. We hope that many private citizens will make plans to attend. Additionally, we urge every club to send a group of delegates.

It is very important that GOAL know in advance who will be attending so that we can have sufficient materials on hand. Call 508-393-5333 and ask for Jim or Nancy when you decide to be a part of Lobby Day 2003!
