Message from the Secretary
Hunting season! It’s finally here. Tree stands are up. The Deer Archery season opens October 13th.

Good luck to all the hunters.

I’m sorry to report that the Turkey dinner had to be cancelled. Not enough members signed up to have it. Due to that fact the club annual raffle has been postponed until our next dinner. Our Roast Beef dinner is scheduled for Saturday, November 15th. Mark your calendars and make every effort to attend.

I’m also sorry to report that the Halloween Party has been cancelled. There wasn’t enough interest to pursue the idea.

The Children’s Christmas party is scheduled for December 7th. Watch next months newsletter for more details.

Don’t lose out — applications are only accepted at Board of Governors Meetings. This special is only available for two more months. November BOG meeting is on the 4th – December BOG meeting is on the 2nd. Meeting starts at 7 p.m. To find out more details contact a BOG member.

Nominating Committee: Elections are drawing near. Bill Lewis, Vin Bartolomeo and Mike Barton are on the Nominating Committee. If any club member is interested in running for an office for 2004 please contact someone on the committee as soon as possible. The club will need a secretary next year and there will be some Board positions open. The Nominating Committee will present the slate of officers for election at the October Monthly Meeting. Our elections will take place at the November Monthly Meeting. These are two very important meeting and you should make plans to attend.

Halloween Party: Cancelled

Bow hunter’s Contest: Sign-up sheet is on the club bulletin board. Contact Jim Gallagher for complete details.

Children’s Xmas Party is scheduled for December 7th. More details will be posted in the November newsletter.

Monthly Raffle: Glen Smith’s name was picked for the raffle. Unfortunately he was not in attendance.

Condolences: The Club membership sends its sincere condolences to the family of Warren “Giant” Payne. Giant was a devoted Club member for many years. Giant, Roy Anderson and Bill Murray started the “Can Committee” many years ago and donated thousands of dollars not only to our Kid‘s Fishing Day and Jr. Conservation Camp but many local charities. He will be greatly missed at the club. Our thoughts are with you during this most difficult time.

Get Well Wishes: We are sorry to report that two of our members have been ill but both are now on the road to recover. We send get well wishes to Art Stetson and Bob D’Auria Sr. We look forward to seeing you both at the club soon.

Dick Bregoli

Matt Mucciaccio

Robert Alpert

There is also one gentleman who helped set out targets on Saturday morning to prepare for the shoot whose name has slipped my feeble mind. Please come forward and make yourself known and claim your hours towards the membership work requirement. I can't credit you if I don't know how to contact you.

On the morning of October 5, because some who said they would be there to help did not show up, this event teetered on the brink of failure. It was the members listed above who made the event the success that it turned out to be. There were some who said they would be there and were true to their word. Some came at a moments notice because they received a phone call that morning asking for help. Some arrived at the club for whatever reason, saw a need and without being asked, offered to help or just got to work. And there were some who went over and above the commitment they made before the event to assure that everything went smoothly. Any sports fan in New England knows just what these people gave up to help out with this. It is due to their efforts that the event was a success.

We had over 40 shooters sign up and everything went smoothly. Some membership applications went out, many young people were introduced to the sport of archery and some older ones rekindled their interest in the sport as well. Everybody had fun and I heard a lot of positive feed back from those who attended. We also made some money for the club. These events go a long way in supporting and maintaining an interest in archery by bringing new people into the sport and allowing them to see just how satisfying the arc of a well shot arrow can be.

On Sunday, October 5, there were three big team efforts that resulted in big wins. The Red Sox, the Patriots and the team at the Concord R&G. Thank you all very much for your time and effort.

Sincerely,

Richard Gagnon

Trap News

The winner of the 2003 Club Trap Championship was Charlie Samios. The overall match ended with both Charlie and Mark Lewis in a tie with 99's. They went into a tie-breaker round with Charlie coming out on top.

There were 2 classes competing for honors. As stated, Charlie took top honors, and Bruce Harvey won the second class. Both winners were awarded a case of shells as prizes. Charlie will also have his name engraved on the Club plaque in the hall.

We had 15 shooters participate and after the formal competition, had some fun shoots and then all the shooters enjoyed an Italian style dinner prepared by Chef Dick Bregoli. This pretty much concludes the major trap activities for the season. We are looking forward to next year with the possibility of a third team to join the two existing teams in League competition. Anyone interested in joining the third team should let me know as soon as possible.

Archery News

Archery meeting was held Thursday evening September 5th as previously announced. The main topic of discussion was "what we should do in 2004 regarding archery shoots". The opinion was that Concord Rod & Gun should host only one Bay State shoot this year to be held on May 2, 2004.

We will then host a second annual traditional archery shoot August 8, 2004 which has no Bay State affiliation. In addition Bill Jarmo would like to hold a hunter’s shoot in conjunction with a shed show sometime in September or early October. Details of this endeavor will be solidified and announced as time goes on.

When the 2004 Bay State Schedule was ironed out the following Monday, there were some open dates of which Concord may take advantage, especially open dates in August. Since we have to set-up for the traditional shoot as stated above, there would be little problem to complete the set-up a week earlier and host a second Bay State shoot on August 1, 2004. We can then leave the targets up for the intervening week, make some modifications to the course and hold the traditional shoot as planned. There would be several benefits to this plan, 1) we could keep to our two shoots per year schedule with Bay State 2) we would help Bay State plug some of the holes in their schedule 3) it would help promote archery within our club 4) and finally it would be another opportunity to make some money for the club.

Although four events may seem a little aggressive and we have not even taken into consideration any clinics which may be held, we must remember that archery is one of the things we do at Concord R&G, so we can have some fun, make a few doubloons for the club and keep archery a going concern. And remember to be successful we need not only your help but also your participation.

IMPORTANT SPORTSMEN’S NEWS

U. S. F & W Service - Supports MASS Sportsmen
S
tate Ineligible for Federal Aid $$$

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service office in Hadley Mass., in a letter to MassWildlife Director Wayne MacCallum, has issued an opinion that they believe that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is "no longer eligible to participate in" the Federal Aid in Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program. In addition, "the State is likely in diversion based on provisions within the FY 2004 budget". What this means is $4,696,755.00 in Federal Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration funds are in jeopardy for the current Federal Fiscal Year.

They have set a thirty day period within which corrective action must begin or the Director of the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service will be asked "to declare Massachusetts no longer eligible to participate in the Federal Aid in Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration Programs". Corrective actions should include restoration of Section 2 of Chapter 131 of the Massachusetts General Laws and restoration of any funds (license fees, Wildlands Stamp funds, etc) that may have been transferred to the General Fund or Stabilization Fund.

Sportsmen and women need to put pressure on the Governor, State Senators and Representatives to restore the Inland Fish and Game Fund (established by M.G. L. Chapter 131 Section 2) and the sportsmen’s money which the F/Y 2004 budget diverted to other uses
