Walking the Club Property Bounds

With the pace of land development in our area, it is important that the membership be knowledgeable of our Club’s boundaries. Brad Stetson is offering a guided walk of the Club’s property lines on November 27th.  Please contact Brad @ btstets@aol.com or call 978-369-8926 for the time and details.

Committee Reports

Pistol – Chairman, Robert Alpert reports that the Pistol Range has had a makeover that goes more than skin deep. He and Robin Fields replaced the cork board, signs, shell containers, trash can, pen holder, lamp and target box.  Wearing protective clothing and HEPA masks, they also cleaned the dirt, dust and lead off all of the surfaces using special lead removing solution.

We need your help to keep the range clean at all times.  Pick up after yourself by disposing your targets in the trash or recycling container, and put your expended brass in the appropriate container or brass bucket for recycling. If the trash can is full, help by disposing the plastic bag in the dumpster.

Also, remember to pay for the targets you use.  We don’t make a profit on targets, just try to break even.  Failing to pay for targets results in a loss for the Club.

Safety Issue:  Lastly, please make sure that you roll the targets at least ¾ of the way down range. Understand that a round striking the target holder may ricochet back at you if it is any closer, resulting in possible serious injury.  Further, shooting at closer targets may result in the rounds striking the floor, necessitating earlier replacement.  Anyone found not abiding by this rule will lose range privileges.

Delegates’ Reports

Middlesex County Sportsmen’s League – Delegate Barry Robinson reports that the MCL is planning for a meeting on Thursday, March 30, 2006 at our Club.  More details on the main topic of discussion and whether to open to the meeting to the general public will be forthcoming.

Mass. Wildlife – submitted by Delegate Kim Sullivan -- MIGRATORY BIRD HUNTERS NEED TO GET HIP! If you plan to hunt ducks, geese, sea ducks, brant, woodcock, snipe or rails, you must have a H.I.P. number (Harvest Information Program). Mass. Wildlife needs your cooperation to gather the information needed to conserve and manage our waterfowl, woodcock, snipe and rail populations.  You will need a new HIP number each calendar year.

  • If you buy your hunting license and waterfowl stamp on-line from MassOutdoors, your HIP number will automatically be assigned to you on-line.
  • If you buy your hunting license, either on-line or from a license vendor, but purchase a waterfowl stamp over-the-counter from a license vendor (town clerk, sporting goods, store, Mass Wildlife facility, etc.), you may only get a HIP number by calling 1-800-WETLAND.  Write the HIP number on your MassOutdoors license.  If you have with the Wetland number, call customer service toll free at 1-888-764-7343.  If customer service is unable to resolve your problem, please call the Mass Wildlife Westborough office at 508-792-7270 during business hours.

Your cooperation is necessary to provide an accurate tally of the harvest of migratory game species, which in turn will be used to ensure proper management of these valuable wildlife resources. Hunters Make the Difference!

Mass Wildlife News: Extracted from Addendum to 10/4/05 Mass Wildlife News – submitted by George Checkowski Resident Canada Goose Population Estimate: This year for the first time since 1997, Mass Wildlife biologists made an attempt to estimate the number of Canada Geese living in Massachusetts .  The estimate was calculated by neck collaring a sample of geese captured during normal summer round-ups to band molting adult birds and pre-flying goslings; then looking for those collars while counting all of the geese observed in August after the molt was over and geese were able to fly and disperse around the state. Mass Wildlife Water fowl Project leader H.W. Heusmann determined that there were in excess of 40,000, including those populations on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard .

Regulations to Prevent Chronic Wasting Disease Passed by Board – The Mass. Fisheries & Wildlife Board voted unanimously at its September 28 meeting to institute regulations designed to prevent Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) from entering the Commonwealth.  CWD is a fatal neurological disorder known to affect white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk and (just confirmed for the first time in Colorado ) moose. While research continues, current information suggests that CWD is most likely caused and transmitted by an abnormal protein present in the nervous system and lymphatic tissue of infected animals.  These abnormal proteins, called prions, are very stable and may persist in the environment for long periods, posing a risk to animals that come into contact with them.

While the World Health Organization has concluded that  there is no evidence that people can become infected with CWD, it has the potential to decimate wild and captive deer herds.

Vermont , New Hampshire and Rhode Island have similar regulations in place and are consistent with regulations set or proposed to be set by other state fish and wildlife agencies bordering states with confirmed cases of CWD. For more information regarding CWD and actions taken by Mass Wildlife against this disease, go to www.mass.gov/masswildlife. For national CWD info, click on the Chronic Wasting Disease Alliance website at www.cwd-info.org
