Message from the Secretary
I think I have become tuned into Spring lately. Everyone has been wishing that it would get here faster and there is no one wishing harder than my daughter, as she is about to give birth to my newest grandchild. These thoughts of new life, warmer days and the feel of the soft fuzzy buds on the tree across the street from our house have set my spirits soaring.
 |
Yes, Spring is finally here!

Archery News
Spring will soon be upon us and then the cold winter months will be just a mere memory. Please join us for archery “practice” in the main hall every Thursday night. Come sharpen your skills. Before we know it, we will be venturing outdoors to the “real” ranges. Meanwhile, the boards and targets are stored on the porch for anyone to use.

The National Firearms Museum
On February 26, 2004 the National Firearms Museum unveiled a new shotgun exhibit funded by the F. R. "Rudy" Etchen Endowment to honor Rudy Etchen, one of America's premier shotgunners, and highlight the popular shotgun sports of skeet and trap. Doug Wicklund, senior curator, noted during the ceremony that: "This museum tells the story of Americans and their guns. This exhibit enhances the museum's message by telling the story of smoothbores by one of America's first family of shotgunners."
Special pieces that are part of this exhibit include the milestone six-millionth Remington Model 870 shotgun loaned by the Etchen family, the engraved Ithaca trap shotgun once owned by renowned bandmaster John Philip Sousa and a selection of rare Kreighoff, Parker and Winchester arms that equally illustrate the sports of skeet and trap shooting.
Set against a backdrop vista of the Vandalia, OH Grand American shooting range, the exhibit presents arms of the shotgun disciplines as they might be placed into action on the sporting fields. Recognition of international achievement in this display is provided with the 1924 Olympic gold medal awarded Fred Etchen as captain of the US shotgun team. Memorabilia including books, shooting patches, glass target balls and other accoutrements loaned by friends of the museum help tell this unique shooting story.
The National Firearms Museum is located at 11250 Waples Mill Road in Fairfax, VA. The museum is open every day (except major holidays) from 10-4 and is free. For more information you can call them at 703-267-1600.

Let's take a look into the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game's Licensing and Registration System, otherwise known as MassOutdoors.
To better serve you, they have automated the licensing operations of the Divisions of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife), Marine Fisheries, and EOEA's Office of Environmental Law Enforcement. While there, you can purchase your Massachusetts hunting, fishing and sporting license, recreational lobster permit and renew your motorboat, ATV, and snowmobile registration.
Furthermore, when your license information is in their system, you may also receive subsequent licenses, permits and registrations through the mail. Your license fees support inland and marine fisheries research and management, wildlife restoration programs, land conservation efforts, and environmental law enforcement.

Hooking Dogs on Fishing
Fishing season will soon be here, and while you may bait your hook in anticipation of snagging a lunker largemouth, trophy trout or a mess of panfish to fry, you could end up deep-hooking your pooch.
Fishhooks are wonderful attractants to dogs, particularly when loaded with cheese, bread, or stink bait.
Unfortunately, the barbs that keep the fish on the line work just as effectively at keeping the hook in your dog's mouth or throat.
As fishing season approaches, make sure to clean out all the used line and hooks from your boats, sheds, and tackle boxes. Let's hope the biggest fish you ever catch will be the kind with fins.
