Elections for New President and Open BOGs’ Position

If you read the newsletter masthead closely, you would have noticed that Lawton Read is now the acting president, replacing Kevin Flavin who regretfully had to resign his post for work-related reasons.

Thank you Kevin for your brief and productive term, and thank you Lawton for volunteering to temporarily fill this critical position. As a result of this switch, Kevin is now a member of the BOGs, replacing Artty Kinsman. To temporarily fill Lawton’s vacated position, Artty volunteered to fill this open position on the Board of Governor’s slate until elections are held at the August 31, 2005 Members’ Meeting. All of these changes were discussed in light of the Club By-Laws, and approved by a quorum of the BOGs and officers present at the meeting.

Nominees’ names for the open positions of President and on the Board of Governors will be taken at the July 25, 2005 meeting and elections will take place at the August 22, 2005 .  Members wishing to run for these positions should notify individuals on the current Board of Governors before July 25, 2005 .

Family Outing Firming Up – Sunday, June 26, 2005, Starting at 11:00am

Kevin Flavin has volunteered to head up the Family Outing effort, and Kim Sullivan has created a colorful handbill highlighting the events that will take place. This event is designed specifically to provide members’ kids with a fun experience at the Club while introducing them to the shooting sports.  Here are the particulars:

  • Archery – introduces boys and girls to the joys of shooting arrows at balloons
  • Turkey Shoot – kids get a chance at popping .22 caliber shot at a moving turkey target
  • Cake Walk – kids get to walk the walk and a chance to win a yummy cake
  • Trap Shooting – introduces kids to the fun of scattergunning
  • Air Rifle – would be Annie Oakleys and Red Ryders get to shoot at balloon targets
  • Pie Eating Contest – after all of the above competitions, kids can eat their reward

A number of volunteers have stepped up for the Air Rifle, Cake Walk, Trap, and Turkey Shoot but we still need more members to supervise the Archery, Pie Eating, etc., as well as to sell tickets and to run the grill for hotdogs and hamburgers, and provide cold drinks. Please call Kevin at: 978-371-9550; or send him an e-mail at: Kevin.flavin@comcast.net.

Cakes Needed for Cake Walk -- Limited Members, here’s your chance to work off your hours at a fun event with children and parents enjoying the day together. Bake a cake for the cake walk and let Corrine Kinsman know, bring it down and give a hand. Also, give Kevin a call or send him an e-mail regarding which event you want to support.

Help Preserve the Corey Land

The Concord Land Conservation Trust is very fortunate to have the opportunity to acquire a remarkable property consisting of 27 acres of hayfields, woods, and wetlands, located just to the north of Barrett’s Mill Road , between Lowell Road and Strawberry Hill Road . These 27 acres abut private land under conservation restriction that in turn abuts our Concord Road & Gun Club property.

Thanks to the generosity of the owners, sisters Rosita Corey and Elizabeth Corey Bourquin, the Concord Land Conservation Trust has been given the chance to purchase this significant land, assessed at a value of $6.7 million, for $1million.

In advanced giving, the Trustees  have already received $250,000.00 towards the purchase. As neighbors,  we are excited at the possibility of helping the trustees raise the sum to acquire this historically and ecologically significant parcel, and we hope that you will join us in enthusiastically supporting this effort.

Consider that if each of the 350 CR&GC members made a cheque out to the Concord Land Conservation Trust for the Corey Land purchase for $20.00, we will have contributed $7,000.00 towards preserving this beautiful parcel consisting of 8 acres of hay fields and an 18 acre  wildlife corridor of pine woodland and red maple wetlands. For more information, contact member Ellie Horwitz at 978-369-4935.

Committee Reports

Archery – Rich Gagnon, Chairman, reports that the Archery Clinic on Saturday, May 14 was well attended. Tim Kilroy helped Rich during the clinic which ran for over three hours and covered four main topics: 1) setting up target backstops and lighting for the indoor range; 2) different types of bows available, from the modern expensive carbon to less expensive, traditional wood; 3) discussion of where Club bows and targets are stored, and access once card readers are installed; and 4) a walk of the outdoor range, covering different shooting ops that each target offers, including the 3-D targets.

Rich and Tim closed with a discussion of the importance of shooting practice, capturing the attention of all the new archery students. The new students demonstrated their newly learned skills by hitting the target, and some actually nailing the bull’s eye. Checkout the pictures on the CR&GC website.

Grounds – Bill Lewis, Chairman, wishes to express his and the Club’s sincere thanks to Dante Bartolomeo, Vinnie’s uncle, for his most generous donation of a lawn tractor. Dante is one of the founding members of the CR&GC and designed the bridges that span the pond’s spillway at the Club’s entrance. We are fortunate to have such long-time members who continue to contribute to the Club’s welfare over the years. Thank you very much Dante.

Pistol – Robert Alpert, Chairman, notes that the competitions in the Nashoba Valley League ended in April.  The Club hosted three teams this year, adding a new, keener level of fun and competition among the home teams, as well within the league. Concord C took 2nd place; Concord B took 3rd place, and Concord A placed 5th overall. It was a very close season, hotly contested, particularly among the three Concord teams.

In addition, this year Concord had six shooters place in the top 10 for averages, and nine shooters in the top 20, which shows how strong our shooters are compared to other league shooters.

David Karr of the “C” team took home the “High Iron-Sight Award” with an average of 270.22, which also put him 9th overall in the entire league standing. Robin Fields, also of the “C” team, won “The Most Improved Shooter” trophy for the league.  Congratulations to David, Robin, and the entire A, B and C teams for a great season of straight shooting!

Trap – Vin Bartolomeo, Chairman, reports that they held the 2004 Trap Championship on Saturday, June 4, and that Joe McTeague and Mark Lewis tied for first place with 98 points each.  There will be a shootoff on the 11th or 12th to determine the winner.

Sportsmen’s Affiliations

Middlesex County League of Sportsmen’s Clubs – Barry Robinson, Delegate, noted that the next meeting will take place at the Nashoba Sportsmen’s Club in Acton on September 29, 2005 . Also, that work on the Kids’ Pheasant Hunt is progressing. In addition, he reported  that Chronic Wasting Disease in deer had recently been found in farm-raised and wild deer in upper state New York . CWD has not yet been detected in Massachusetts deer.

U.S. Sportmen’s Alliance – Bow Hunting At Risk

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance reports that the Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have banded together to ban bow hunting throughout the United States . A report from the Humane Society released on Jane 31 lays out the group’s plans to ban hunting in 2005. Checkout their website for more detail: www.ussportsmen.com.

Armed Forces Day Dinner & Dance

Although the attendance at the Armed Forces Day Potluck Dinner & Dance on May 22, 2005 was sparser than hoped, several veterans of past conflicts who are members and who hadn’t been at the Club for years dropped in to sample the food and trip the light fantastic to the tunes of yesteryear that were popular during those past eras. Our thanks to Kim Sullivan for organizing and driving this worthwhile event.

Concord Senior Shakers

Member Marge Stetson shakes a mean tambourine along with 12 co-shakers. These high energy, entertaining seniors from the Concord Council on Aging have caught the attention of local and

national media, having been filmed for the David Robicheau Show on Channel 38, and may appear on the Jay Leno Show on 21 or 22 June.

Their tambourine routine is performed to recorded music of Scott Joplin, Turkey in the Straw, Yankee Doodle, and the Stars & Stripes Forever, and they have performed  at schools in Westford, at the Harvey Wheeler Center in Concord and in Bedford . We hope we can have Marge and the Concord Senior Shakers perform at some upcoming event at the Concord Rod & Gun Club.
