Message from the Secretary:

Monday, June 14th is Flag Day. Traditionally, we Americans express our patriotism on the Fourth of July by wearing, flying, and decorating everything we can with red, white, and blue. But the real history of this special day goes back to 1885 when BJ Cigrand, a school teacher from Wisconsin, had an idea to celebrate June 14th as 'Flag Birthday'. It wasn't until 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. Thus this Monday will be the 55th celebration of National Flag Day, but it is also the 227th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes.

On a personal note... I would like to thank the member who lowered the club's flag this past week in honor of President Reagan. Thank you.

If you have a recipe or a story to share, please call me at 781-424-1800 or email me at my new email address: crgcsecretary@yahoo.com.There is another arena that it is possible for us to explore - one that we can do personally. It requires a "risk taker" mentality and an adventurous spirit, and I want to give you instructions on how to get there. I am going to take you on a philosophical journey beyond yourself. This may seem a bit esoteric and mysterious, but humor me for a moment.

Pond News

The rowboats and canoes located down by the dock are for use by club members and their guests. The law requires that a flotation device (life jacket) be worn when boating. There are children and adult size jackets stored in the lower level of the club on a rack near the paddles and oars.

If the particular boat or canoe you wish to use is chained, the keys are located on the wall behind the bar. Please remember to put them back when you are finished.

If you have any questions about the pond, Warren Soar, the Pond Chairman may be reached at the club or by phone at 978-897-7827.

Father's Day is Sunday June 20th

I can think of no better place to celebrate this special day honoring fatherhood than by bringing your son or father to the club for an afternoon of fishing, archery, and/or trap shooting.

Fishing

Speaking of fishing... I was asked to report that
"Lenny Plamer caught a trout!"
Congratulations Lenny!

Archery News

I would like to start with a thank-you to all the Thursday night archers for their generous contributions to the St. Judes Children’s Hospital Shoot hosted at the Woburn Sportsmen’s Club on June 6th. By passing the hat a very impressive $120.00 was collected which was more than enough to sponsor a target at the shoot. Some history behind this event: Bay State Archers for years have dedicated one 3-D shoot annually to St. Judes with all the proceeds gained from the shoot donated to the hospital. Several clubs have hosted this shoot over the years but the Woburn club has hosted the last couple. Monies are raised from several sources, entrance fees, and raffles of donated hunts and compound bows, bucket raffles and sponsorship of targets throughout the course. The event is concluded with a formal presentation to a St. Judes representative of the total amount collected (last year $11,000) with the understanding that archers both bow hunters and target shooters alike made this donation possible. This goes along way in casting archery in a very positive light to the general public and everyone benefits from the event, the hospital, the kids and the archers.

The last few touches to the archery course have been completed. New bow hangers were made by Jim O’Donnell, Frank Gill, Dell Ferranti and myself (Charlie Anderson supervised) and were hung throughout the course. Some of the McKenzie targets have been changed for somewhat better conditioned ones and the course route shaken up a bit to add a little variety.

Last month I thanked all those who helped with the Bay State 3-D shoot and I did not include Jim Jackman on that list. I apologize for that oversight Jim.

The last item I would like to speak about is the tomahawk targets. I set up a 14 target course that mirrors the archery course for “hawk” throwing. The first order of business is to try and get those damn things to stick in the target, so distance is up to the thrower. Get as close or as far as you feel good with and wing away. We made only a few inquiries to sellers of the “hawks” and the price ranged from $20.00 to $40.00. I chose Cabela’s $20.00 “hawk” and Eileen got a smaller/lighter version for $17.00. By no means top of the line items but seeing the abuse they take in learning the technique, they will do for now. Get one and you can combine your archery shooting with tomahawk throwing on Thursday’s archery night.
