The Nov 18 '04 Concord Journal reports the death on Nov 14 of Mary A. Nelson, widow of Nels Nelson, former lifetime member of the Concord Rod & Gun Club.
John J. Powers, 54, a lifelong resident of Concord, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at Emerson Hospital in Concord. (May 04, 1950 - December 07, 2004) Born in Concord on May 4, 1950 he was the son of the late James and Catherine (Gallagher) Powers. For many years, Mr. Powers was an active participant of the Minute Man Arc Workshop Program. A lifelong Concord resident, he enjoyed his time at the Concord Rod and Gun Club where he was a Life Member. (Taken from the published obituary)
Johnny Powers was the son of Jim Powers (my sponsor) and both were members of the CR&GC. Johnny had Downs Syndrome and survived to his "late" age I am sure due to the love and affection he received from his family. Johnny was an Honorary Member. Jim started a plan at the club to send kids to the Easter Seal camp and he hoped to create a fund with enough money that the return on investment would perpetuate the plan.
Jim very often would bring Johnny to the club. Many of the members would play cribbage, and Johnny had his own deck of cards, because he kept adding and deleting cards. Johnny was one of the happiest people I have known.
We very often had fund raising raffles and would ask Johnny to draw the winning ticket until, one time, he drew a ticket from the hat, and without even looking at the ticket, he announced "Jim Powers" as the winner.
Young Jim, Johnny's brother, would sometimes bring Johnny to the club after the elder Jim passed away, and Johnny remarkably would remember many of us by name, always giving us a high five and asking how we were.
Johnny's brother Marty is a member of Musketaquid Sportsman's Club (the other Concord club) and a good friend of many of the CR&GC members. Marty started the cribbage tournament between the two clubs in which the winning club has the cup and bragging rights for the year. You can view this cup in our member's lounge, at least for this year.
I think the family members would appreciate a card from the club. Also, in view of the fact the elder Jim Powers was an early and long time member of the club and contributed greatly in its formative years, I think it would be appropriate to send flowers to the funeral home.

At the November General Member’s meeting it was voted upon, and passed by those in attendance, that the dues would be raised by $20 for next year. The initiation fee would also be raised by $20 in 2005. A letter will be sent out from the Financial Secretary giving more details..
The CRGC welcomed 1 new member to its ranks at the November General Members Meeting. If you see Greg Johnson from Acton around, give him a warm welcome. Bill Lewis sponsors Greg. During the December BOG meeting, Justine Alpert, daughter of Robert Alpert, was voted in as a limited member. We look forward to seeing her on the archery course and in the pistol range soon.

CRGC Cribbage Tournament 2005
The annual Concord Rod & Gun Club cribbage tournament will begin on January 7, 2005. The playing time will be at 7PM in the downstairs lounge with crackling fire and munchies to get through the grueling games!
The past few years has shown a growing number of players spending Friday evenings out of the cold and enjoying the races around the cribbage boards. The tournament is open to Club members, their spouses, SO’s, or for that matter any friend of a member who is interested in joining us.
The tournament lasts for 10 weeks with a couple of weeks tacked on at the end for make-ups in case one misses a week or two due to conflicts. Other times are allowed for make-ups as long as there are four tournament players available to make a foursome.
There is a $15 fee to enter the tournament, which covers the end of play dinner and prizes for the winner and master of the 19’s.
We will also be having our fourth annual challenge with the Musketaquid Club. We will be hosting the event this year with Concord Rod & Gun holding a 2 to 1 edge over the Musketaquid Club over the three years of competition lets go for three in a row!
If anyone is new to the Cribbage circuit, and would like to learn before the tournament starts, let me know and we’ll see if we can’t arrange some beginners lessons on Sunday afternoons between now and January 7th.

This has certainly been a busy year for me. I have learned a lot about the club’s history, it’s members, and how the club runs. In turning over my duties as Secretary, I have kept the email address below so that the members can contact Sheryl with news for next year’s newsletter. Please support her as she takes on this new role.
Remember…If you have a recipe or a story to share, please email Sheryl at the club’s email address: www.crgcsecretary@yahoo.com
Thank You's...
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Christina Shibles, daughter of member Kimberly Sullivan, for all of her hard work creating the very colorful backdrop for the Children’s Christmas party. Christina freehand drew and then painted the delightful woodland animals and elves on the 8’ by 16’ paper covered archery backdrop. Plans are to leave it up in the main hall for another few weeks. We hope to save it for next year’s party. Please stop by and take a look. Read on to see a couple of party photos with Santa (a.k.a. Del).
Grounds Notes
Bill is looking for someone with a log splitter. If you have one to lend, please give him a call.
Currently, Bill Lewis has numerous projects going on the club grounds and he is always looking for members to work. Please call him if you want to lend a hand repairing/building a project, or if you have to satisfy your work requirements as well. Many hands make light work!

Central District stations had 711 deer checked, Northeast District 575 and Southeast District checked 999. Last year’s final archery total was 3,045.
The shotgun season opened statewide on November 29 and ran through December 4 on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, and through December 11 across the remainder of the state. "We have a large and healthy deer herd,” said Bill Woytek, MassWildife’s Deer Project Leader. “We are on track with the overall trends in harvest.” During the 2003 shotgun season a total of 6,824 deer were checked. The highest shotgun season kill on record was 1995 when 8,131 deer were taken.
Deer hunters are reminded that the muzzleloader season is open through December 31, 2004 and hunters must have an antlerless deer permit to take antlerless deer.
BROODSTOCK SALMON - HERE FOR THE HOLIDAYS
While a 12-pound broodstock salmon might be a little large for a Christmas stocking, Massachusetts’s anglers will be able to add "catch a trophy salmon" to their wish list this holiday season. Since before Thanksgiving, MassWildlife stocking trucks have been moving about 2,200 broodstock salmon from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's White River National Fish Hatchery in Vermont and 500 from the Nashua National Fish Hatchery in New Hampshire as well as 150 fish from MassWildlife’s Roger Reed Salmon Hatchery in Palmer to lakes and ponds across the Commonwealth. Weather conditions permitting, all stocking will be completed by January 1.
"These fish weigh between 2 and 20 pounds, and are all retired from broodstock service," reports MassWildlife Chief Fish Culturist Dr. Ken Simmons. "Each of our five regional Districts is receiving fish to be stocked in waters determined by the District Fisheries Biologist." Salmon will be released in: Windsor Pond, Windsor; Onota Lake, Pittsfield; Laurel Lake, Lee; Stockbridge Bowl, Stockbridge; Goose Pond, Tyringham; Lake Mattawa, Orange; Metacomet Lake, Belchertown; Congamond Lakes, Southwick; Five Mile Pond, Springfield; Comet Pond, Hubbardston; Lake Quinsigamond, Worcester; Webster Lake, Webster; Wallum Lake, Douglas; Whalom Lake, Lunenburg; Baddacook Pond, Groton; White’s Pond, Concord; Lake Cochituate, Framingham/Natick; Lake Saltonstall, Haverhill; Hopkinton Reservoir, Hopkinton; Horn Pond, Woburn; Little and Long Ponds, Plymouth; Peters Pond, Sandwich; Sheep Pond, Brewster.
